Review: The Trap by Beverley Kendall

Rating: ★★★★★ stars
Date published: May 5th, 2014
Synopsis: Looking back, I should have seen it coming.

Paige didn’t like that I went so far away to university. But it was going to only be for two years. She'd join me after she did her two years at community college. I thought we could swing that no problem. We were solid.

But she hated the distance. She hated not seeing me every day. She complained that I didn’t come home enough. She hated that for months on end, texting and phone calls were our only form of communication. It wasn’t enough.

She'd ask about the girls on campus. She’d gotten it into her head that girls were always making a play for me. I laughed and told her, even if that were true, I’d never cheat on her. She didn't seem completely reassured by that.

The bottom line is, Paige thought she was losing me. She wanted me home with her. But I could never imagine the level she'd sink to—the trap she’d set to make that happen.

And like an idiot I walked right into it.

And it’s a mistake I'm going to have to pay for the rest of my life.

What I Thought

I'm a huge fan of Beverley Kendall's.  I love her historical romances and when she started writing NA, I was a little skeptical but all my doubts disappeared when I read Only For You.  The book was simply amazing.  When I saw this book was coming out, I was excited but apprehensive because I wasn't sure if I was going to like all the characters in the book.  I mean the title of the book is The Trap and I was fairly certain one party was guilty of trapping the other.  I thought the book would be from Mitch's point of view.  Well it turns out that everything I thought was totally wrong and I was fearful for no reason at all.

I loved this prequel.  It's under a 100 pages but packs an emotional T.K.O.  You know that achy feeling you get in the pit of your stomach sometimes when you know bad news is coming your way?  I got that.  I cried, yes cried, when Paige realized things weren't going to be okay.  I literally felt like her pain and agony was my own as she was ripped to shreds.

It was so easy to forget this was a prequel, considering the emotional highs and lows I experienced.  I felt as if I read this in no time at all.  I was sniffling as I finished the story and was left reeling once again after I read the first chapter of Trapped, the full length novel coming featuring Mitch and Paige next month.  Trapped can not come soon enough.  There are so many more secrets to be revealed.  Did Paige really trap Mitch?  That's the one question I want answered.  I'm also looking forward to seeing Zach and Olivia, April, Troy, Rebecca, and perhaps Scott from Beverley's Unforgettable You series make guest appearances.

Beverley Kendall is a wonderful versatile storyteller.  She weaves a web of love and heartbreak that will leave you reeling long after the last page is finished.

About the Author
I have always loved books, romance and wished that everyone (most especially me) would find their happily ever after. Add in my love of London, England set in a period when ladies strived to be genteel and dresses could barely fit through doors, and it was obvious I could write nothing but historical romances.
As the single mother of one too bright and mischievous young boy, I now write full-time and enjoy the process of self-publishing my novels. When I'm not writing, mothering, reading or running The Season website and blog, I'm enjoying some of my favorite hobbies: knitting, crocheting and sewing.
I'm currently being represented by the wonderful Kevan Lyon at Marsal & Lyon Literary Agency.

And that's really enough about me. There's more to explore on the website. Enjoy!
