Review: One Tiny Lie by K.A. Tucker

Rating: ★★★★★ stars
Date published: June 11th, 2013
Publisher: Atria
Synopsis: Livie has always been the stable one of the two Cleary sisters, handling her parents' tragic death and Kacey's self-destructive phase with strength and maturity. But underneath that exterior is a little girl hanging onto the last words her father ever spoke to her. “Make me proud,” he had said. She promised she would...and she’s done her best over the past seven years with every choice, with every word, with every action.

Livie walks into Princeton with a solid plan, and she’s dead set on delivering on it: Rock her classes, set herself up for medical school, and meet a good, respectable guy that she’s going to someday marry. What isn’t part of her plan are Jell-O shots, a lovable, party animal roommate she can’t say ‘no’ to, and Ashton, the gorgeous captain of the men’s rowing team. Definitely him. He’s an arrogant ass who makes Livie’s usually non-existent temper flare and everything she doesn’t want in a guy. Worse, he’s best friends and roommates with Connor, who happens to fits Livie’s criteria perfectly. So why does she keep thinking about Ashton?

As Livie finds herself facing mediocre grades, career aspirations she no longer thinks she can handle, and feelings for Ashton that she shouldn’t have, she’s forced to let go of her last promise to her father and, with it, the only identity that she knows.

What I Thought:

I love Livie.  I loved her in Ten Tiny Breaths and was beyond ecstatic when K.A. Tucker announced the series was going to continue with the next book starring Livie.  My happiness knew no bounds when I read the blurb; it was like this book written with some of my favorite tropes in mind.  First of all you've got the good girl/bad boy thing, then you've got the fact that Ashton is an athlete.  I don't think that's a trope, but boy does it get my juices flowing.  I love men who are athletic.  Everything was stacked so I'd love the book, and I did.

One Tiny Lie was a phenomenal book.  It started off with an amazing first chapter, and that's all it took to hook me.  I read this book in one sitting, as I do with all K.A. Tucker books.  I still can't believe the turns this story took.  I wasn't big on how Ashton was hot and cold with Livie, but all was forgiven when it was revealed why.  He was flawed but knew it and Livie was flawed too.  It's their flaws which made them so likable and easy to relate to.

Besides the banter between Livie and Ashton, I absolutely loved seeing Kacey, Trent, Storm, Dan, Mia and everyone else.  The part that made me laugh and absolutely broke my heart and made me cry was the kids Livie visited in the hospital.  That portion of the book is as important to me as all the dialogue I enjoyed and all the smoke Livie and Ashton gave off from the sparks they lit off each other.

I discovered this series late, but I'm so glad I did.  K.A. Tucker has this way that always pulls you into her books.  Her characters are well defined and thought out.  Her story is always full of turns you don't see coming and she'll both make you laugh and cry, like I did.  I've written so much about how great this book is, and yet I've left out so much you can only experience and understand by reading this book.  If you're one of the holdouts who hasn't read this book yet, or any of the books in this series, please pick it up asap.  You'll be wondering why you didn't do it earlier.
