Review: Her Destiny by Monica Murphy

23112576Rating: ★★★★ stars
Date published: August 24th, 2014
Publisher: Self published
Synopsis: I knew from the moment I first saw him he was the one. The only boy I could ever want.
The only boy I could ever love.
They say he’s bad for me.
But I know he’s not.
Until the day he rejects me.
And breaks my heart.
Completely.

Everything changes in the blink of an eye. My entire life as I’ve known it is…gone. Secrets are revealed. Promises once made are irrevocably broken. There’s no way my family can get back to what we once were.

So when Nicholas Fairfield walks back into my life like he never left it, I’m furious.

Thrilled. Irritated. Excited.

Conflicted.

Despite my confusion, I want to be with him. I love him. But danger lurks where we least expect it. Someone will do whatever it takes to tear us apart. All I know is: I won’t let them.
Because Nick Fairfield? He’s mine.
What I Thought:

I have a love/hate relationship with cliff hangers.  I love the anticipation that comes with them, knowing I'm going to get more of a story I enjoy, but hate having to wait for it.  I've read a number of books by Monica Murphy and know a cliffhanger is something she's familiar with, but knew the pain of waiting was worth it. His Reverie had ended on but a brutal cliffhanger.  It wasn't just in one aspect either, but multiple upheavals that occurred simultaneously.  So I was eagerly awaiting the release of Her Destiny to find out what was going to happen to the separated lovers.

It felt so wrong to see them apart, especially when they would've preferred to be together.  I was surprised to see how changed Reverie was.  In a way I was sad to see her innocence go, but happy to see her taking her happiness into her own hands.  I wasn't very happy with Nick for turning her away, but then again I wasn't happy with how he was being targeted once again for something he didn't do. I was eager to find out who Krista's killer was.  The identity took me by surprise, and although it made sense, I kept expecting the other shoe to drop.

I found the unsent communication Nick and Reverie wrote to each other to be extremely romantic.  I felt it was a great way to prove their bond was still strong and true even though they were no longer in each other's lives. Speaking of bonds, Ethan was quite a surprise in this book.  It was great to see him and Reverie together and being a family.  I was not very happy with their parents. Good riddance to them.  I was hoping to find out the reason for their mother's partiality towards Ethan, but that didn't happen.

The book was written well.  I read it as fast as I could and was not disappointed when I finished it. This duology is the first young adult series I've read from Monica Murphy.  She's proved she can write in many different genres and age ranges.  I look forward to hopefully reading more YA from her.  Perhaps Ethan can get his own book.  I'd definitely like to read about that, even if it would be NA and not YA.
