What I Thought:
This book was a total surprise. I love stories where unlikely people are fated to be together. Seeing them struggle to mesh their beliefs and lives is always satisfying. It shows how even though you're meant to be, the journey isn't as smooth as one would think. I loved how this story caught my attention from the very first page. I really liked the way Jill Myles built and introduced this new world to us. I really felt like I was visiting another world with all of these fascinating new beings.
I can't say I sympathized with the Athonites much. Especially not the way they were treating the people they conquered like the Vidaris. I was amazed at how my feelings towards both the Athonites and Vidaris changed as I read the story. It wasn't like my allegiances switched between one people or another, but my perception of them did change. I stopped caring about who was who and was totally invested in Prince Graeme and Seri.
To say Graeme and Seri butted heads and were opposites in personalities goes without saying. Both of them had very strong personalities and ideas about what their future would be like. Having to all of a sudden deal with being bound to the other was tough for both. I liked seeing them figure out how to work around their differences and come together both for themselves and their peoples. I also loved the connection they had with each other. Even when they were at odds, they showed a care and concern for the other that was touching.
There aren't many moments in this book that made me laugh, but there were moments that made me cry happy tears. There were some sad and angry tears as well. There's a lot of action and drama that comes with nobles being bored for hundreds of years. The book will certainly keep you on your toes and captivated as the story unfolds. I would love to read more books set in this world. I hope Jill Myles continues to write in the paranormal fantasy romance genre. I certainly would read it!
